Sheppard to his brother, re shelling at Seccessionville, camp life, encounters with the enemy, and urging his parents to be hopeful re his and his brothers' survival. Also including letter, 22 June 1862, James Island, S.C., Benjamin Sheppard, to his mother, re camp life, the horrific aftermath of battle, and the barbarity of a war waged by educated, civilized people; and letter, 7 Feb. 1865, Augusta, Ga., John Sheppard, to his mother, reporting plans by military authorities to burn cotton rather than let it fall into the hands of the enemy.
